The BMW R68 was a 594 cc sport version of the pre-1955 BMW motorcycles, built from 1952 to 1954 in just 1,452 examples, which makes it one of the rarest production BMW motorcycles. BMW showed it at the German International Motorcycle Show in Frankfurt in October 1951 with 35 hp (26 kW), a racing-type magneto, larger 26 mm Bing carburettors and an improved twin leading-shoe front brake, against the low-compression R67/2. It was announced as the first 100 mph motorcycle and shown as a road bike capable of 105 mph (169 km/h) with two low silencers, alongside an off-road version with a single high silencer. A separate pillion pad let the rider slide backward and crouch at speed, and full-width brakes arrived for the 1954 model year.
