The BMW R 63 appeared in 1928 as BMW's 750 cc sporting motorcycle. BMW began producing it in July 1928 as a sporting machine for the 750 cc class together with the largely identical R 57 for 500 cc, continuing the building-block principle by which frame and gearbox were shared and the engine size and sporting or touring character came from crankshafts with strokes 10 mm apart and from overhead-valve or side-valve cylinders. The introduction was modest, because the new pressed-steel frame models were already on show at the Berlin motor show in November 1928. The R 16 followed it.
