BMW R 47

Motorcycles and Powered Two- and Three-Wheelers

The BMW R 47 was a boxer-twin motorcycle that appeared in 1926 as the improved successor to the sporting R 37. BMW began producing it in January 1926, alongside the simpler side-valve touring model R 42 in the same frame, and carried on the building-block principle of its early range: chassis and gearbox were largely shared, and sporting models had overhead valves while touring models had side valves. It was two horsepower stronger and a little lighter than the R 37, with a longitudinal boxer engine and shaft drive to the rear wheel, and it was the first BMW with slight silencing of the exhaust. It cost 1850 Reichsmark, 1050 less than the R 37. Production ended in 1928 after 1720, and the R 57 followed it.
