The BMW R 16 was a boxer-twin motorcycle built by BMW from 1930 to 1934, the sporting sister model of the side-valve touring R 11. At the Olympia show in London in November 1928 BMW presented the R 16 and R 11 as its first motorcycles with pressed-steel frames, riveted from shaped sheet in the manner of Ernst Neumann-Neander, though deliveries in Germany began only in summer 1930. The 736 cc engine had overhead valves, and the front fork stayed a leaf-sprung trailing link. It was built in five series: the first came with lighting and a speedometer, the second widened the shaft-drive brake and added a two-plate clutch, the third added twin Amal carburettors, the fourth battery ignition and the fifth a chain-driven camshaft.
