The Suzuki Katana AY50 is a 49 cc scooter that Suzuki has produced since 1997 and sold mainly in Europe. It is named after the early 1980s motorcycle of the same name, and the code AY shows a two stroke engine, A, intended for urban use, Y. The motorcycle press and classic bike enthusiasts widely criticised the name for damaging the credibility of the Katana name. Some parts are inspired by racing, such as the carbon look Magneti Marelli instruments and the Showa upside down front suspension. Early models had a space under the seat for a helmet, while the later facelift model had a plastic plate welded in to stop a helmet fitting because Honda said it would sue over its patented design. The engine is a 49 cc two stroke made by a joint venture of Suzuki and Franco Morini producing 2.43 kW, and a liquid cooled AY50R was also made. The engine also powers the Estilete UF50 and Zillion UX50.
