Honda XL 500

Motorcycles and Powered Two- and Three-Wheelers

The Honda XL500 is an air-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder enduro motorcycle that Honda sold worldwide from 1979 to 1981 as the XL500S, followed by the modified XL500R from 1982 to 1984. Honda brought it out as a direct rival to the Yamaha XT500, which had surprised the market in 1975, and gave it a more advanced four-valve engine with a single overhead camshaft, 498 cc and 33 PS (24 kW). The XL500S was one of the few road-registered motorcycles fitted as standard with a 23-inch front wheel, while the XL500R added a Pro-Link central rear shock and a 21-inch front wheel. About 20,190 XL500s were registered in Germany from 1979 to 1984 against 20,264 XT500s from 1976 to 1984, and the all-new XL600 followed it from 1983.
