BMW R80G/S

Motorcycles and Powered Two- and Three-Wheelers

The BMW R 80 G/S was a motorcycle manufactured in Berlin, Germany, by BMW Motorrad from 1980 to 1987, with production totalling 21,864 bikes. It was the first of the BMW GS family of specialised dual-sport bikes and is often considered the world's first adventure bike, equally capable on and off-road; G/S stands for Gelände/Straße, offroad and road. Its 797.5 cc type 247 flat-twin boxer was a modified R 80/7 unit with Nikasil cylinders, electronic ignition and a lighter flywheel, fitted in an R65 frame, and it introduced the Monolever, a single-sided swingarm combined with the drive shaft that was stiffer and lighter than earlier designs. Lighter weight, longer suspension travel and a 21-inch front wheel set it apart from other BMW road bikes of the era, and several wins in the Paris-Dakar Rally made it popular with adventure travellers.
