The BMW R1150GS and R1150GS Adventure are motorcycles that BMW Motorrad manufactured from 1999 through 2004, with a limited run of 2005 and 2006 model year Adventure models as well. They belong to the BMW GS family of dual-sport or adventure motorcycles and have a 1,130 cc horizontally opposed flat-twin engine with shaft drive and a new six-speed gearbox that replaced the five-speed of the R1100GS. The standard model ran from 1999 to 2004, when the more powerful and lighter R1200GS replaced it, and the Adventure ran from 2001 to 2005. From late 2002 optional ABS gave way to an electrically servo-assisted combined braking system and the engines gained twin spark plugs per cylinder. The Adventure added an optional 30-litre tank, a larger screen, a single-piece seat, 20 mm taller suspension and a lower first gear; 58,023 standard and 17,828 Adventure models were made, and Cycle World named the R1150GS Best Sport Touring Bike in 2000.
