The BMW R1100GS is a dual-sport motorcycle that was launched in 1993 and manufactured from 1994 to 1999 by BMW Motorrad in Berlin, Germany. It has a 1,085 cc flat-twin boxer engine first seen in the R1100RS and was the first GS to use an air- and oil-cooled engine rather than the air-cooled airheads used on BMW motorcycles since the R32 in 1923. The engine introduced partial oil cooling and four valves per cylinder operated by a single chain-driven camshaft, with Motronic fuel injection in place of carburettors. It kept the Paralever swingarm with remote preload adjustment on the shock, used the new Telelever A-arm front suspension, and offered heated grips and ABS as options. A smaller 848 cc sister model, the R850GS, was produced from 1996 to 2001, and the R1150GS superseded the R1100GS in 1999.
