BMW R 1150 GS Adventure

The BMW R 1150 GS Adventure is a travel enduro from the German maker BMW, shown to the press at the Frankfurt motor show on 13 September 2001. From 2002 to 2005 BMW built 17,878 of them at its Berlin Spandau plant on the basis of the R 1150 GS, and like every R series model it is driven by a boxer engine. Compared with the plain GS it has 20 millimetres more suspension travel at both ends, a WP shock absorber with travel dependent damping, a single piece seat, a stronger and longer engine guard, hand protectors, a larger luggage rack, steel braided brake lines, a larger windscreen and a wider front mudguard, and the first and sixth gears are geared shorter. A 30 litre fuel tank, crash bars and fog lamps were options. The air and oil cooled engine of 1,130 cubic centimetres makes 62.5 kilowatts, accelerates the bike from 0 to 100 kilometres an hour in 4.3 seconds and has electronic manifold injection. Ready to ride it weighs 285 kilograms. The bike became widely known through the documentary series Long Way Round.
