BMW GS series

Motorcycles and Powered Two- and Three-Wheelers

The BMW GS is the long-running series of adventure-touring motorcycles from BMW Motorrad, on sale since 1980. It began as the R80 G/S, a name meaning terrain and street, and became the machine many riders credit as the first adventure bike, pairing some of a dual-sport motorcycle's off-road ability with touring comfort and luggage capacity. GS models are recognised by long-travel suspension, an upright riding position and large front wheels of 19 or 21 inches. The series has moved through boxer-engined generations nicknamed Airhead, Oilhead, Hexhead and Wethead to the R1300GS of 2023, and it also includes single-cylinder and parallel-twin models such as the G310GS and the F850GS. Its early sales helped rescue BMW's motorcycle division, and in June 2023 BMW announced one million boxer-engined GS machines built.
