The BMW F 650 GS is a road and light off-road enduro that BMW presented in 2000 as the successor of the F 650 built with Aprilia, made at its Berlin plant. Its water-cooled 652 cc Rotax four-stroke single, now with fuel injection, has a large flywheel mass that allows low-revving riding, double ignition from 2004 and a typical consumption of 3.5 to 4.5 litres of regular petrol per 100 km. With the F 650 GS Dakar, a more traditional enduro with a 21 inch front wheel, longer suspension travel and hand guards, and the road-oriented F 650 CS Scarver of 2001 to 2005, it formed the second generation of BMW single-cylinder 650 models from 2000 to 2007. The Dakar was planned as a limited run of 1,000 after Richard Sainct won the Dakar in 1999 and 2000, but demand kept it in production. In all 56,485 F 650 GS were made. From 2008 BMW reused the name for a twin-cylinder entry model with a throttled 800 cc engine, built until 2012, and the Swiss army adopted the F 650 GS Military in 2001.
