The original CX500 of 1978 had a 48 hp, 497 cc water-cooled V-twin with four pushrod-operated valves per cylinder, a longitudinal layout with shaft final drive, ComStar wheels and radical styling with a steep fork angle, a short engine and a stubby wheelbase. The Custom and Deluxe variants appeared in 1979, and in 1981 Honda released the GL500 Silver Wing touring variant. The CX500 proved dependable and economical, and was the cheapest shaft drive bike. Each model year has its own page.
