The BMW R1100RS is a sport-touring motorcycle that BMW Motorrad manufactured between 1993 and 2001, and the first BMW motorcycle to use the R259 Oilhead boxer engine. The 1,085 cc flat-twin has a maximum output of 90 horsepower (67 kW) and was named Oilhead because it had air-cooled cylinders but oil-cooled heads. The bike used a frameless design with the engine as a stressed member, and BMW's own Telelever front suspension bolted directly to the engine, which takes braking forces back horizontally to minimise fork dive; a rear subframe supported the rider, passenger and luggage, and fully faired and half-faired variants were available. The engine was adopted for the R1100GS in 1993, and a six-speed version powered the R1100S in 1999. It reached the United States in 1994, when Cycle World chose it as the best standard motorcycle of 1994.
