BMW R 3

The BMW R 3 was a 300 cc touring motorcycle from the German maker BMW and was built in only one year, 1936. BMW showed it at the German automobile show in Berlin in February 1936, four years after the large single-cylinder R 4, and priced it at 1050 Reichsmark before cutting the price to 995 by September. Its pushrod engine had overhead valves, power reached the rear wheel through a shaft, and the gearbox was a hand-shifted four-speed. The machine sat awkwardly in the market, because it lacked the power of the R 4 and the tax and licence exemption that made the R 2 attractive. Only 740 were built, and in 1937 the R 35 replaced both the R 3 and the R 4.
