Igor Sikorsky

Also Known As Sikorsky · Igor Ivanovich Sikorsky
Aviation Industrialists and Engineers
Crossed Rotor Blade

Russian-American aviation pioneer who, after an earlier career building fixed-wing aircraft in the Russian Empire, designed and flew the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300 in 1939, the first viable American helicopter, establishing the single-main-rotor-with-tail-rotor configuration most helicopters still use. He then developed it into the Sikorsky R-4, the world's first mass-produced helicopter, which entered service in 1942. FAQs

Why did Igor Sikorsky leave Russia for the United States?

He saw little chance of working as an aircraft designer in war-torn Russia and emigrated in 1919.

After the First World War Sikorsky briefly worked as an engineer for the French forces in Russia during the Russian Civil War. He saw little opportunity for himself as an aircraft designer in war-torn Europe, and particularly in Russia, which was ravaged by the Bolshevik Revolution and the Civil War, so he emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on March 30, 1919. He became a naturalized United States citizen in 1928.

Aviation, Modes

Sikorsky pioneered the practical helicopter specifically, a distinct branch of aviation from the fixed-wing flight the Wright brothers already hold primary credit for on this atlas; recorded associated rather than holds for that reason.
