Waterborne Mode

A waterborne transport mode in which a boat or ship carries passengers, and often vehicles and cargo, across a body of water on a fixed, scheduled route rather than a one-off voyage. The practice is ancient, old enough that Greek mythology cast the boatman Charon as the ferryman of the underworld, and it took modern form in the nineteenth century with the roll-on/roll-off ferry emerging around 1850 and the world's first dedicated automobile ferry crossing the Bosphorus in 1871. Today ferries range from small urban water-taxi services to large ocean-going vessels carrying thousands of passengers and their vehicles, remaining a cost-effective alternative to a bridge or tunnel on many short and long crossings alike.
