Freight Rail

Rail Mode

The rail-based transport of cargo rather than passengers, using freight cars coupled into trains and hauled by locomotives over the same general railway infrastructure used for passenger service, though often on dedicated freight lines and with heavier axle loads. Freight rail carries bulk commodities such as coal, grain and ore, as well as containerized and intermodal cargo, and remains one of the most fuel-efficient ways to move heavy goods over long overland distances.
