Historians use periodization for exactly this purpose, since it is "the process or study of categorizing the past into discrete, quantified, and named blocks of time for the purpose of study or analysis," as Wikipedia puts it. Browsing figures by era shows who was working alongside whom, even across different countries and modes of transport.
