Akizuki-class destroyer (2010)

Marine Vehicles

The Akizuki class is a group of four destroyers of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, designed to escort the Hyūga-class and Izumo-class helicopter carriers and to protect the other Aegis-capable warships, such as the Kongō and Atago classes, against surface, air and undersea threats. The programme was first called 19DD, after the nineteenth fiscal year of the Heisei period, 2007. The hull follows that of the Takanami-class destroyers, with cleaner lines to cut the radar signature, decoys for torpedoes, more powerful sensors and the domestic ATECS battle management system, which the article says has been called the Japanese Aegis. All of the ships use a higher-powered version of the Rolls-Royce Spey SM1C gas turbine, where the Takanami class mixed Spey and General Electric LM2500 turbines. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries built three of the four ships at its Nagasaki shipyard, and Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding built the fourth at its Tamano shipyard.
