The Hatakaze class is a pair of guided-missile destroyers, Hatakaze and Shimakaze, that form the third generation of destroyers in service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and were the first of its ships to have gas-turbine propulsion. The core weapon suite resembles that of the preceding Tachikaze class, with improvements in many areas, most of all those that let the class act as a group flagship. That duty normally falls to a larger ship, but if it is away for repairs, accident or battle damage, the Hatakaze design can serve as a command ship. The destroyers operate the OYQ-4-1 tactical control system and carry the Standard surface-to-air missile, anti-submarine rockets, the Harpoon anti-ship missile, two Mark 15 20 mm close-in weapon mounts, two triple torpedo mounts and two 5-inch Mark 42 rapid-fire guns. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries built both ships at its Nagasaki shipyard.
