Japanese aircraft carrier Amagi

Marine Vehicles

Amagi was an Unryu-class aircraft carrier built for the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II, named after Mount Amagi. She was ordered as part of the Kai-Maru 5 Program of 1942, which was meant to replace the losses of the Battle of Midway, and was one of 16 Unryu-class carriers planned of which only three were completed before the end of the war. Her keel was laid down by Mitsubishi in Nagasaki on 1 October 1942, she was launched on 15 October 1943 and she was completed on 10 August 1944. She was 227.35 metres long and displaced 20,450 metric tons, and four geared steam turbine sets of 152,000 shaft horsepower gave her a designed speed of 34 knots. The shortage of carrier-qualified aircrew meant that she never embarked her air group and spent the war in Japanese waters. Hit by bombs in American carrier raids on Kure in July 1945, she flooded and capsized on 29 July, and she was later refloated and scrapped.
