Japanese aircraft carrier Jun'yō

Marine Vehicles

Jun'yō was a Hiyō-class aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy, laid down as the passenger liner Kashiwara Maru and bought by the navy in 1941 while still under construction, then converted into a carrier. Her keel was laid down by Mitsubishi on Slipway No. 3 at their shipyard in Nagasaki on 20 March 1939, as yard number 900. She was launched on 26 June 1941 and commissioned on 3 May 1942. She was 219.32 metres long and displaced 24,150 metric tons at standard load, with two Mitsubishi-Curtis geared steam turbine sets of 56,250 shaft horsepower and six Mitsubishi water-tube boilers giving a designed speed of 25.5 knots. Completed in May 1942, she took part in the Aleutian Islands campaign and in several battles of the Guadalcanal campaign, and her aircraft operated from land bases during the New Guinea and Solomon Islands campaigns. She was torpedoed in November 1943 and again in December 1944, was damaged by bombs at the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and was left hulked at the end of the war before being broken up in 1946 and 1947.
