Italian battleship Littorio

Marine Vehicles

Littorio was the lead ship of the Littorio class of battleships, built for the Italian navy in response to the French Dunkerque and Strasbourg. She was laid down at the Ansaldo shipyards in Genoa in October 1934, launched in August 1937 and completed in May 1940, and with her sister Vittorio Veneto was among the first of the 35,000 ton capital ships laid down under the Washington Naval Treaty. Four geared steam turbines gave about 30 knots, and nine 381 millimetre guns formed her main battery. Badly damaged at Taranto in November 1940, she later fought at the Second Battle of Sirte. Renamed Italia in 1943, she was hit by a radio-controlled bomb, was interned after the armistice, was awarded to the United States and was scrapped at La Spezia.
