The Colossus class was the first group of British light fleet carriers, built to the 1942 Design Light Fleet Carrier that the Royal Navy drew up as a cheap and quickly built step between the expensive full-size fleet carriers and the limited escort carriers. Sixteen were ordered and all were laid down to the Colossus design during 1942 and 1943, although only eight were completed to it; the last six were altered during construction into the larger Majestic class. The hull was designed to merchant shipbuilding standards so that yards with no naval construction experience could build it, and the machinery sat in two staggered compartments, each with two Admiralty three-drum boilers and a Parsons geared turbine. Harland and Wolff built Warrior at its Belfast yard, yard number 1224, laid down in December 1942 and launched in May 1944. She served the Royal Navy, was loaned to the Royal Canadian Navy as Warrior for two years, and was later sold to Argentina as Independencia.
