Napier Deltic

Locomotive Engines

The Napier Deltic is a British opposed piston, valveless, supercharged, uniflow scavenged two stroke diesel engine built by D. Napier & Son with cylinders arranged in a distinctive three bank triangle and a crankshaft at each corner, developed from 1947 under a 1946 Admiralty contract. Its exceptional power to weight ratio, roughly one fifth the weight of the conventional engines it replaced in a converted German E-boat trial, made it revolutionary for fast naval craft, and it also powered the celebrated British Rail Class 55 locomotives and a New York City Fire Department super pumper.
