The ALCO 251 is a four stroke diesel engine the American Locomotive Company developed from 1949, approved for testing in 1951, to replace its earlier 244 and 539 engines. Built in configurations from an inline six producing 800 horsepower to a V18 producing 4,000 horsepower, it powered diesel-electric locomotives, marine vessels including Canadian icebreakers and Coast Guard cutters, and stationary generators including the NASA Crawler-Transporter, and remained in production under later manufacturers long after ALCO itself ceased to exist.
