Sikorsky CH-54 Tarhe

Lighter-Than-Air Craft and Rotorcraft

The Sikorsky CH-54 Tarhe is an American twin-engine heavy-lift helicopter that Sikorsky Aircraft designed for the US Army, named after Tarhe, an 18th-century chief of the Wyandot whose nickname was The Crane. It grew out of Sikorsky sky-crane work, above all the piston-engined S-60 of the late 1950s, as the Army sought a successor to the CH-37 Mojave. The first of three prototypes made its maiden flight on 9 May 1962. The civilian version is the S-64 Skycrane.
