The Hughes TH-55 Osage is the piston-powered light training helicopter that the United States Army took from Hughes's Model 269 family. Hughes began the Model 269 as a private venture in September 1955 and its prototype flew on 2 October 1956. The 269A received FAA type certification on 9 April 1959, and in 1964 the Army adopted a modified 269A as the TH-55A, buying 792 between 1964 and 1967. It stayed the Army's primary helicopter trainer until 1988, when the UH-1 Huey replaced it, by which time over 60,000 Army pilots had trained on it. The same design sold commercially as the Model 200 and the Model 300, and Schweizer later built the 300C under license. Nearly 3,000 copies of the Model 269 and 300 have been built.
