Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche

Lighter-Than-Air Craft and Rotorcraft

The Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche was an American stealth armed reconnaissance and attack helicopter designed for the United States Army by a team of Boeing and Sikorsky. It grew out of the Light Helicopter Experimental program begun in 1982 to replace several Army helicopters, and in April 1991 the Army selected the Boeing-Sikorsky design. Two prototypes were built and flew between 1996 and 2004, the first making its maiden flight on 4 January 1996. The Comanche was to carry its weapons in internal bays and mount a rotary cannon, and to designate targets for the AH-64 Apache. The programme was cancelled in 2004 before mass production began, after nearly seven billion dollars had been spent, and both prototypes are now on public display.
