The Sydney Harbour Bridge, a large steel arch bridge completed in 1932, carries road, rail and pedestrian traffic across Sydney Harbour and is one of the most recognizable structures in Australia. It was built to connect Sydney's central business district with the rapidly growing suburbs on the harbour's north shore, replacing slower ferry crossings and enabling more intensive development of the north side of the city. Its steel arch, one of the largest of its type built, made it a major feat of engineering for its era, and it remains closely associated with the city's identity, particularly through the fireworks displays staged from it each New Year.
