Lincoln Tunnel

Tunnels

The Lincoln Tunnel carries road traffic beneath the Hudson River between Weehawken, New Jersey, and Midtown Manhattan, and is among the busiest vehicular tunnels in the world given the volume of commuter traffic it carries into New York City each day. Built in stages with three separate tubes opened between the late 1930s and the mid-1950s, it was constructed to relieve growing road traffic pressure on the region's existing Hudson River crossings as car ownership expanded in the New York metropolitan area. It remains a critical artery for commuters and buses traveling between New Jersey and Manhattan.
