Grumman Gulfstream I

General Aviation and Light Aircraft

The Grumman Gulfstream I, company designation G-159, is a twin-turboprop business aircraft and was the first of Grumman's Gulfstream executive transports. After rejecting an adaptation of the Widgeon and studying a turbine version of the Trader, Grumman settled on an all-new low-wing design powered by Rolls-Royce Dart turboprops, with a cabin tall enough to stand in. The design was finalised in June 1957, the first aircraft took off from Bethpage, New York on 14 August 1958, and the Federal Aviation Administration awarded a type certificate by 2 May 1959. The stretched G-159C carried 37 passengers, and several regional airlines flew the Gulfstream I in scheduled service.
