The Sukhoi Su-38 is a Russian agricultural aircraft, the first of its type designed and built by the civil aircraft section of the Sukhoi Design Bureau. Design began in 1993 as a development of the Su-29 aerobatic aircraft, was suspended because of economic problems and restarted in 1998 with a smaller, redesigned airframe that replaced the planned M-14 radial engine with a LOM Praha 337S inline engine. The first prototype made its maiden flight on 27 July 2001, and a second was flying by June 2002. The Su-38L version has one crew member, a 500 litre chemical hopper, a six-cylinder air-cooled piston engine of 184 kilowatts and a gross weight of 1,200 kilograms.
