Cessna XMC

General Aviation and Light Aircraft

The Cessna XMC, short for Experimental Magic Carpet, was a two-seat prototype technology demonstrator that Cessna built to test advanced aerodynamics and materials in light aircraft design, including a ducted propeller and a swept cantilever wing. The program ran from the start of 1971 to the end of 1972 with a single aircraft, designated Model 1014 and later Model 1034, which carried a 100 horsepower Continental O-200 engine in a pusher layout and a tail boom similar to that of the Skymaster. Cessna test pilot Bruce Barrett made its first flight on 22 January 1971, and the modified 1034 first flew on 1 June 1972 with a shrouded propeller. The XMC used metal-to-metal bonding, but it proved noisier in the cabin than the production Cessna 150 and offered no performance advantage, so the project ended in 1972.

  • Design and development, first flight
The first flight of the 1014 model was made on January 22, 1971 by Cessna test pilot Bruce Barrett. The aircraft was modified in 1972 and given a new model number, 1034. In this configuration it was first flown June 1, 1972, again with Bruce Barrett at the controls.
  • Specifications, powerplant
    Powerplant: 1 × Continental O-200 4-cyl. horizontally opposed air-cooled piston engine, 100 hp (75 kW)
  • Design and development
The aircraft was used to assess improved visibility, center of gravity effects, control surface locations and response, cabin noise levels and also the relationship of wing versus engine and propeller.
  • Design and development, prototype
The sole prototype was registered as N7174C and given Cessna serial number 674.
  • Lead, maker
The two-seat Cessna XMC was built to test several concepts in light aircraft design including a ducted propeller and swept cantilever wing.
