Savoia-Marchetti S.55

Flying Boats and Seaplanes

The Savoia-Marchetti S.55 is an Italian flying boat, first flown in 1924 and notable for its unusual twin-hull, twin-boom configuration with the crew and engines mounted in a central structure between the two hulls. It became internationally famous through a series of long-distance formation flights across the Atlantic Ocean in the early 1930s led by Italian aviator and politician Italo Balbo, mass formation crossings that were widely publicized at the time as a demonstration of Italian aeronautical capability and national prestige.
