The Dornier Do J, known as the Wal, or whale, was a twin engine flying boat designed by the German firm Dornier Flugzeugwerke in the early 1920s and built under license in five different countries. It was used across the interwar decades for passenger transport, mail routes, polar exploration and military patrol, and its significance to German aviation was recognized when the Reich Air Ministry gave it the official designation Do 16 under its 1933 aircraft naming system.
