Bartolomeu de Gusmão

Aviation Pioneers and Aviators

Bartolomeu Lourenco de Gusmao (1685 to 1724) was a Portuguese Catholic priest and naturalist, born in colonial Brazil, who is regarded as an early pioneer of lighter than air flight. He is credited as among the first scholars of his time to grasp the basic principle behind hot air balloon flight, that heated air rising inside an enclosed envelope could lift a vessel, and to build a working small scale prototype demonstrating the idea, work that predates the celebrated Montgolfier brothers' public balloon demonstrations in France by roughly six decades. His research and demonstrations took place in Lisbon, where he petitioned the Portuguese crown for support of his aeronautical experiments. He is also remembered in Portuguese and Brazilian culture as a central character in Nobel laureate Jose Saramago's novel Baltasar and Blimunda, which fictionalizes his flying machine experiments alongside the building of a monastery. His work stands as one of the earliest documented European attempts to reason systematically about the physics of buoyant flight rather than simple imitation of birds.

FAQs

Did Bartolomeu de Gusmão himself ever fly in a balloon?

The documented 1709 demonstration was a ball driven to the roof by combustion, not a piloted flight.

The firmly documented demonstration was smaller. The Catholic Encyclopedia reports that the public test of his airship, set for 24 June 1709, did not take place. It is certain that at the public exhibition he gave before the court on 8 August 1709, in the hall of the Casa da Índia in Lisbon, he propelled a ball to the roof by combustion. According to contemporary reports he appears to have made several less ambitious experiments with the machine, descending from eminences, so a piloted balloon flight is not established.
