An American airline entrepreneur who founded the Aviation Corporation of the Americas, which became Pan American Airways, and led it from its first flight, Key West to Havana in 1927, into the twentieth century's leading international airline. He drove Pan Am's adoption of successive generations of aircraft, championed lower fare tourist class travel, and, seeking an aircraft far larger than the Boeing 707, asked Boeing to build what became the Boeing 747, for which Pan Am was the launch customer. Was Pan Am's first flight flown in a Pan Am aircraft?
The first Key West to Havana flight used a hired floatplane. The return flight used a Pan Am Fokker F.VII.
Not entirely. Pan Am's first flight took off on October 19, 1927, from Key West, Florida, to Havana, Cuba, in a hired Fairchild FC-2 floatplane that was being delivered to West Indian Aerial Express in the Dominican Republic. The return flight from Havana to Key West, on October 29, was made in a Pan Am Fokker F.VII, after a delay from October 28 caused by rain. Juan Trippe had created the Aviation Corporation of the Americas, the company that evolved into Pan American Airways.
