Horace Elgin Dodge Sr. was an American automobile manufacturing pioneer who, together with his brother John Francis Dodge, co-founded the Dodge Brothers Company, the firm that became the modern Dodge automobile brand. Horace worked as a machinist and gifted mechanic, credited with inventing an early dirt proof ball bearing, before the brothers opened a Detroit machine shop in 1901 that supplied precision parts to the Ford Motor Company. In 1913 the Dodge brothers moved into building complete automobiles under their own name, introducing the Dodge Brothers Model 30 the following year, a car well regarded for its durability. Horace Dodge was born in Niles, Michigan in 1868 and died in Palm Beach, Florida in 1920, the same year as his brother John.

FAQs
Did the Dodge brothers keep working for Ford after they began building their own cars?
They stopped making Ford parts in July 1914 but kept their Ford shares until Henry Ford bought them in 1919.
The Dodge brothers ended their parts business with Ford before their own car appeared. The last Ford parts left the Dodge Main factory in Hamtramck, Michigan, on 15 July 1914, and two days later the brothers incorporated Dodge Brothers Inc. The first Dodge Brothers touring car left the factory on 14 November 1914. Horace and his brother John still held Ford stock after the supply work stopped, and in 1919 Henry Ford bought the brothers' remaining Ford shares for 25 million dollars.
