Herberts Cukurs

Aviation Pioneers and Aviators

Herberts Cukurs was a Latvian long-distance pilot who became internationally known in the 1930s for solo flights across long and difficult routes, including a trip from Latvia to Gambia and a return journey from Riga to Tokyo, achievements that won him the Harmon Trophy in 1933 and made him a celebrated figure in Latvian aviation at the time. His flying career combined self-built and modified aircraft with careful route planning across regions with little aviation infrastructure, and it stands as a significant chapter in the history of interwar long-distance civil aviation. After the Second World War Cukurs also operated scenic flight services in Brazil using Republic RC-3 Seabee aircraft, continuing to work as a pilot after emigrating from Europe. His aviation record is inseparable from a second, far darker history: during the German occupation of Latvia he served as deputy commander of the Arajs Kommando and took part in the mass murder of Latvian Jews between 1941 and 1944, a role that led to his assassination by Mossad agents in Uruguay in 1965. The transport atlas entry records him for his documented aviation achievements while the source material also states this history plainly rather than omitting it.

FAQs

Did Herberts Cukurs ever stand trial?

No. Cukurs never stood trial; he was assassinated in Uruguay in 1965 by Nazi hunters working for Mossad.

No. Cukurs never stood trial for his role as deputy commander of the Arajs Kommando. Two decades after the Second World War he was identified in Brazil by a Holocaust survivor and investigated, and in 1965 he was assassinated in Shangrilá, Uruguay, by Nazi hunters working for Mossad. One of the main goals of the assassination was to pressure West Germany into extending the statute of limitations on Nazi war crimes. The deadline was then extended to 1969 and 1979 before the statute of limitations on murder was finally abolished entirely.
