Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho was a Portuguese naval officer, geographer, cartographer, historian and aviator whose most significant contribution to transport history was the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic Ocean. Between March and June 1922, Gago Coutinho and fellow aviator Sacadura Cabral flew from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro in a seaplane variant of the Fairey III, a journey broken into stages across the Atlantic that stood, at the time, as the longest and most demanding ocean crossing yet attempted by a heavier-than-air aircraft. Coutinho's role went beyond piloting: he personally invented navigational instruments used on the flight, including a specialized sextant fitted with spirit levels adapted for use aboard a moving aircraft and an optical instrument designed to measure the aircraft's leeway, or sideways drift, during flight over open ocean where no visual landmarks were available. These instruments addressed a genuine and previously unsolved problem in aerial navigation over water, and Coutinho's South Atlantic crossing, together with the navigation tools he built to make it possible, remains one of the founding achievements of transoceanic aviation.

FAQs
What happened to the seaplane on the 1922 South Atlantic crossing?
The Lusitânia ditched after an engine failure in a storm off Brazil; a British freighter rescued the two aviators and they finished the flight in a new aircraft.
The Fairey IIIB seaplane Lusitânia did not have enough fuel capacity to make the whole trip unaided, so Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral made several stops along the way, shadowed by the support ship República. On the journey down the Brazilian coast a heavy rain storm made the engine fail and the aviators had to ditch in the ocean. A British freighter, the Paris City of the Reardon Smith Line, on its way from Cardiff to Rio, rescued them, and they completed their journey with a new aircraft.
