Gordon Murray is a South African-born, British-based automotive engineer known as one of the most influential racing and road car designers of the late twentieth century. He served as lead designer for the Brabham Formula One team from 1969 to 1986 and then for McLaren's Formula One team from 1987 to 1991, periods that produced championship-winning cars built around his innovative chassis and aerodynamic thinking. Murray is most widely known outside racing circles as the designer of the McLaren F1 road car, whose original concept he championed to McLaren's Ron Dennis, leading McLaren into low-volume supercar manufacturing for the first time. After leaving McLaren, Murray founded Gordon Murray Design and later, in 2017, the specialist manufacturer Gordon Murray Automotive, through which he has continued to produce lightweight, driver-focused cars such as the T.50, explicitly presented as a spiritual successor to the F1. His career illustrates a consistent design philosophy centered on low weight and mechanical efficiency across both racing and road-going vehicles.

FAQs
What was the Brabham fan car that Gordon Murray designed?
A 1978 Brabham with a rear fan that cooled the engine and created ground effect, later outlawed by the FIA.
The fan car was the Brabham BT46B, built for the 1978 Formula One season after the first BT46 version, which used surface cooling, did not work. It carried a large fan at the rear of the engine that sucked air from under the car through a radiator. The fan cooled the engine and also created ground effect. Niki Lauda won the Swedish Grand Prix in it, but the car was later outlawed by the FIA.
