The EMD 710 is a line of two stroke diesel engines built by Electro-Motive Diesel in V8, V12, V16 and V20 configurations with 710 cubic inches of displacement per cylinder, introduced between 1983 and 1985 as the successor to the EMD 645 series after reliability problems with early 1980s 645F locomotives. Power output rose from 3,800 horsepower in 1984 to 4,500 horsepower by 2012, and the 710, running at up to 900 rpm with a hybrid centrifugal and turbocharger, became a benchmark for dependability in railroad service.
