The DF8 is a type of diesel-electric locomotive used by China Railway in the People's Republic of China, almost exclusively on freight services. It was in production from 1984 until the mid-1990s, with mass production starting in 1989, and the revised DF8B is still in production today. The first generation was powered by the original 3,310 kW 16V280ZJ engine made by the Qishuyan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works, and 141 locomotives were produced from 1989 to 1997. The second generation, the DF8B, uses an updated 16V280ZJA engine of 3,680 kW and entered production in 1997, with Qishuyan building the 0 series and the Ziyang Locomotive Works the 5000 series. Further variants include the DF8BJ built by Ziyang with AC traction motors, the DF8CJ built by Qishuyan, and export versions for countries including Iran, Kenya, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. The DF8-0001 prototype is preserved at the China Railway Museum.
