China Railways DF4

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The DF4, from the Chinese Dongfeng 4 meaning East Wind 4, is a diesel-electric locomotive used on the national railway of the People's Republic of China. Trial production began in 1969 at the Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works and batch production started in July 1974. It descends from the earlier ND or Julong and Dongfeng line and was the first domestically built diesel locomotive in China with an AC-DC electric transmission. The first 108 units used the 16V240ZJ engine, and the standard locomotive delivers 2,650 kW with a top speed of 120 km/h on standard gauge with a Co-Co axle arrangement. Later versions include the DF4B, finalized in 1982 and the most common of the Dongfeng series, the DF4C, the DF4D, which has been built since 1996, and the two-unit DF4E. Two DF4DJ locomotives carried Siemens AC drive equipment and were the first AC-drive diesels in China. In 2024 the National Railway Administration said the type is set to run until 2035.
