China Railways DF11

Diesel and Electric Locomotives

The DF11 is a semi-high-speed diesel-electric locomotive used on the national railway system of the People's Republic of China, built by CRRC Qishuyan. It was a by-product of the scientific and technological goals of China's Eighth Five-Year Plan and was designed for 160 km/h running on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway. Development began in 1990 when the Qishuyan Locomotive Works modified a DF9 locomotive with a different traction motor gear ratio, and the first unit, DF11-0001, was completed in December 1992. A later unit reached 183 km/h in a test at the National Railway Test Centre in 1994, and the class entered service on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen line that December. It has an AC-DC electric transmission, a 16V280ZJA diesel engine, a three-phase synchronous alternator and six DC traction motors, and a 25 degree sloped cab. Production stopped in 2005 after 459 units, and the class later gave way to SS8 electric locomotives on the Guangzhou-Kowloon through train.
