Siemens Vectron

The Siemens Vectron is a German multi-system electric locomotive platform, also built in a diesel-electric variant, developed by Siemens and introduced in the early 2010s to serve the increasingly interconnected European rail freight and passenger market. Built to operate across the different electrification voltages and signaling systems used by different European national rail networks, a significant technical challenge given how fragmented European railway electrical and safety standards remained even as cross-border rail freight traffic grew, the Vectron was designed from the outset for the kind of pan-European interoperability that older, single-country locomotive designs typically lacked. The platform has been adopted by a wide range of European freight operators and several passenger railways, reflecting a broader industry shift toward standardized, multi-system locomotive designs capable of running international services without changing locomotives at national borders.
