The GE ES44AC is a freight diesel-electric locomotive built by General Electric beginning in 2004, part of the Evolution Series developed to meet tightening North American emissions regulations while improving fuel efficiency compared with earlier locomotive generations, rated at 4,400 horsepower and using alternating-current traction motors for strong low-speed pulling power. Purchased in very large numbers by major American freight railroads as their standard modern road locomotive, the ES44AC and its later, further-updated Evolution Series successors became among the most numerous and widely recognized freight locomotives in North America during the early twenty-first century, hauling everything from unit coal and grain trains to mixed intermodal freight.
