Ranger-class tanker

Cargo and Merchant Vessels

The Ranger class was a series of six fleet attendant tankers built for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and launched in 1940 and 1941, designed by Rowland Baker to replace the 2,000-ton Belgol class, which in the event stayed in service through the war because tanker capacity was so short. They were single-deck ships with a poop and forecastle and all accommodation and machinery aft, and they carried about 2,600 tons of fuel oil, 550 tons of diesel oil and 90 tons of petrol. The class was built in two groups: Harland and Wolff at Govan built the Black Ranger group, Black Ranger, Blue Ranger and Brown Ranger, each with a single Burmeister and Wain diesel engine that the yard also built, while the Caledon yard at Dundee built Gold Ranger, Gray Ranger and Green Ranger with Doxford diesels. Their service speed was 14.5 knots.
